Our Story

A Living Heritage

Six Centuries of Stories

The Three Sisters Hotel is not merely a place to stay โ€” it is a living monument to Tallinn's extraordinary history. The three medieval merchant houses that form the hotel have stood on Pikk Street for over 600 years, witnessing the rise and fall of empires, the transformation of a city, and the enduring spirit of a people.

Three Merchant Houses Are Built

Three adjacent Gothic merchant houses are constructed on Pikk Street in the heart of Tallinn's thriving medieval trading quarter. Built for wealthy Hanseatic merchants, the buildings feature the characteristic limestone construction, steep gabled roofs, and vaulted cellars typical of the era. The three houses โ€” referred to locally as the "Three Sisters" โ€” quickly become landmarks of the prosperous city.

Centuries of Trade and Commerce

Through the centuries of Hanseatic League dominance, Swedish rule, and Russian Imperial governance, the Three Sisters buildings continue to serve as merchant residences and commercial premises. The thick limestone walls, wooden beam ceilings, and hidden frescoes โ€” some of which can still be seen today โ€” accumulate layer upon layer of history with each passing generation.

19th Century

A City Transforms Around Them

As Tallinn grows and modernises under Russian Imperial rule, the Three Sisters buildings adapt to changing times while retaining their medieval character. The surrounding Old Town, with its cobblestone streets and Gothic spires, begins to attract the attention of historians and preservationists who recognise its extraordinary architectural heritage.

1997

UNESCO World Heritage Recognition

Tallinn's Historic Centre โ€” including Pikk Street and the Three Sisters buildings โ€” is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising it as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a medieval northern European trading city. The recognition brings renewed international attention to the Old Town and its remarkable architectural legacy.
